Why Pet Odours Keep Coming Back

The science behind why sprays and home remedies always fail

What pet urine actually contains

Urea — breaks down into ammonia over time, creating that sharp smell
Uric acid crystals — the main problem. These bond permanently to fibres and reactivate when humidity rises
Creatinine & bacteria — feed on the urea and produce additional odour compounds
Hormones & pheromones — signal to your pet that this is an acceptable toilet spot, encouraging repeat accidents

Why retail products fail

Sprays and powders — mask the ammonia smell temporarily but leave the uric acid crystals untouched. The smell returns when it rains or humidity rises.
Vinegar — acidic, which can actually set some stains. Does not break down uric acid crystals.
Steam cleaning — heat permanently bonds protein-based stains to fibres. Never use steam on pet urine.
Baking soda — absorbs surface moisture and odour temporarily. Crystals remain deep in the backing.

The only permanent solution is enzyme treatment — biological enzymes that digest and break down the uric acid crystals at a molecular level, eliminating the odour source completely.

Professional Pet Stain & Odour Removal

Carpet Lab uses professional-grade enzyme treatments — significantly more concentrated than anything available in retail — combined with hot water extraction to remove the treatment residue completely from the pile, backing and surrounding fibres.

The enzyme solution is applied and left to dwell, during which the biological enzymes break down the uric acid crystals. Extraction then removes all the broken-down residue. The odour does not return because the source has been eliminated — not covered up.

This works on carpets, sofas, mattresses, rugs and any fabric surface. Meyer has treated thousands of pet stain cases across Cape Town since 2001 — including severe cases that other cleaners have failed to resolve.

Old stains too? Yes — even old, set-in stains can be significantly improved. The older the stain the more dwell time required, but enzyme treatment works on stains months or years old in most cases.

First Aid — What to Do Immediately

Act fast — the first 60 seconds matter. Follow these steps before calling us:

1 Blot immediately — use a clean white cloth. Press firmly, don't rub. Work from the outside inward to prevent spreading.
2 Apply cold water — small amount to dilute, then blot again. Repeat 2-3 times.
3 Apply enzyme spray — available from pet shops. Allow to dwell 10-15 minutes, then blot dry.
4 Place dry towel — weight it down overnight to absorb remaining moisture.
⚠ Never use: hot water, steam, vinegar, bleach or scrubbing — all make pet stains worse or permanently set them.

Surfaces We Treat

Pet stains and odours treated on all fabric surfaces throughout your home

🧹

Carpets

All carpet types treated including wool, synthetic and berber. Urine that has soaked through to the backing and underlay addressed with extended dwell time treatment.

🛋️

Sofas & Lounge Suites

Fabric sofas, couches and lounge suites treated for pet odours and stains. Enzyme treatment penetrates into the foam backing where odour-causing crystals accumulate.

🛏️

Mattresses

Pet accidents on mattresses treated promptly prevent permanent staining and structural damage. Enzyme treatment eliminates odours even from older stains.

🌿

Rugs

Persian, kilim, berber and area rugs treated with care. Delicate fibres and dyes assessed before treatment is applied to prevent damage.

🪑

Chairs & Dining Furniture

Dining chairs, armchairs and fabric furniture treated. Pets often mark chair legs and bases — these areas are treated as part of the service.

🏠

Whole-Room Treatment

For severe cases or multi-pet households, whole-room ozone and enzyme treatment eliminates ambient pet odour that has permeated all surfaces in a room.

How Often Should Pet Owners Clean?

Pets that live indoors require more frequent professional cleaning than the general household schedule.

Carpets — 1 indoor pet Every 6 months
Carpets — multiple pets Every 3–4 months
Sofas — pet sleeps on it Every 6 months
Mattress — pet on bed Every 6 months
After any accident As soon as possible
Sliding scale: Treating carpets, sofas and mattresses in one visit is significantly cheaper per item than separate visits.

Pet Stain & Odour FAQs

Can you remove old pet stains that have been there for months?

Yes — enzyme treatment works on old stains in most cases. The older the stain, the more dwell time required. Results depend on the depth of penetration and the surface type. Most old stains are significantly improved and many are fully removed.

Will the smell come back after treatment?

No — not if the uric acid crystals are fully broken down by the enzyme treatment. Unlike sprays that mask the smell, enzyme treatment eliminates the crystals that cause the odour. The smell cannot return because the source is gone. The only exception is if your pet has a repeat accident in the same spot.

Is the treatment safe for my pets?

Yes — all enzyme treatments are non-toxic and safe for pets once the surface is dry. We recommend keeping pets off the treated area until it is fully dry, typically 1 to 2 hours for carpets.

I've tried everything and nothing works — can you still help?

Almost certainly yes. The reason retail products fail is that they don't contain the right enzymes at sufficient concentration, and they don't penetrate deep enough into the backing. Professional-grade enzyme treatment is a fundamentally different approach — not a stronger version of what you've already tried.

How much does pet stain removal cost?

Minimum call-out is R650. Pet stain treatment is usually combined with carpet or upholstery cleaning in the same visit. The sliding scale means the more surfaces treated, the cheaper per item. Call 082 321 8196 for a free quote.

Do you treat cat urine specifically?

Yes — cat urine is actually more challenging than dog urine because it is more concentrated and the crystals are harder to break down. Meyer has extensive experience treating cat urine on carpets, sofas and mattresses. The same enzyme treatment approach applies — just with longer dwell time.
