Red wine is one of the most feared carpet stains — and one of the most treatable, provided you act fast. The tannins in red wine bond to carpet fibres as they dry, which is why a stain that seems manageable in the first five minutes can become permanent if left an hour.
Act Immediately — The 60-Second Rule
Every second counts. The moment the spill happens, your priority is preventing the wine from soaking deeper into the pile and reaching the carpet backing.
Step-by-Step: First Response
- Blot immediately. Use a clean white cloth or white paper towel. Press firmly — don't rub. Work from the outside of the stain inward to prevent spreading.
- Remove solid particles if any are present. Pick them off gently with a spoon.
- Apply cold water in a small amount to the stain and blot again. Repeat 2–3 times to dilute what remains.
- Apply a cleaning solution. A mixture of one tablespoon of dish soap and one tablespoon of white vinegar in two cups of cold water is a reliable home remedy. Apply sparingly.
- Blot with a clean cloth working inward. Repeat the application and blotting until the stain lifts.
- Rinse by applying cold clean water and blotting to remove soap residue.
- Dry by pressing a clean dry towel over the area and weighing it down overnight.
Never use: hot water (sets the stain), scrubbing motions (spread and damage fibres), or coloured cloths (the dye can transfer to your carpet).
When the Stain Has Dried
A dried red wine stain is significantly harder to treat but not impossible. Reconstitute it gently with cold water first, then apply your cleaning solution. The longer it has set, the more likely you'll need professional treatment to fully remove it.
For valuable or delicate carpets — wool, Persian or natural fibre rugs — call a professional immediately rather than attempting home treatment. The wrong product on the wrong fibre type can cause irreversible damage including bleaching, shrinkage or pile distortion.
